01 · The Basics
What is a porcelain veneer, exactly?
A veneer is a thin, custom-made shell of medical-grade porcelain that bonds to the front surface of your tooth. It transforms the appearance of the tooth — colour, shape, alignment, length — while preserving the underlying tooth structure.
The key word here is thin. A properly designed porcelain veneer is between 0.3 and 0.7 millimetres thick — about the same as a fingernail. To bond a veneer to a tooth, only the thinnest layer of enamel needs to be reshaped. The tooth underneath remains structurally intact.
This is the most important difference between an honest veneer treatment and what social media has labelled “Turkey teeth.” Authentic porcelain veneers work with your existing teeth. They’re additive, not destructive. They lighten and refine — they don’t wholesale replace.
At Dentarma, every veneer case is led personally by Prof. Dr. Başak Şeker, our co-founder and aesthetic director. Twenty years of smile design, every case reviewed by the same prosthodontist who founded the practice.
Component 01
A wafer-thin shell of premium ceramic, custom-designed and individually crafted in our in-house dental laboratory to match your face, your existing teeth and your natural smile lines.
Component 01
A microscopically thin adhesive resin that permanently bonds the veneer to the prepared tooth surface. Once cured, the bond is incredibly strong — designed to last 15+ years.
Component 03
The tooth structure underneath stays alive and intact — only a fraction of enamel is reshaped to allow the veneer to sit flush. Your tooth retains its nerve, its root, and its biology.
Preparation 0.3 – 0.7mm only
Veneers vs crowns vs whitening — which do you actually need?
Most patients arriving at Dentarma have already considered three options for improving their smile: veneers, crowns, or professional teeth whitening. Each has a different purpose, cost, and impact on the underlying tooth.

Four veneer treatments, one prosthodontist.
Every veneer case at Dentarma is led personally by Prof. Dr. Başak Şeker. Different teeth and different goals call for different veneer materials and approaches — here’s how to think about which is right for you.
E.max® Lithium Disilicate
Premium German-engineered ceramic veneers — strong, naturally translucent, and the gold standard for cosmetic veneers worldwide. The default for most Dentarma cases.
Most cosmetic cases. Natural translucency for front teeth. Excellent strength for everyday use. Difficult to distinguish from real teeth.
Feldspathic Porcelain
Ultra-thin hand-layered porcelain veneers, individually built up by a master ceramist. The most translucent option — virtually indistinguishable from natural enamel under any light.
Patients prioritising the most natural-looking result. Front teeth where translucency matters most. Slightly more delicate than E.max®.
Lumineers / No-Prep Veneers
Ultra-thin veneers requiring little to no tooth preparation. Ideal for patients with smaller teeth or who prefer the most conservative possible approach to cosmetic enhancement.
Patients whose teeth are small or set back. Cases where minimal prep is the priority. Not suitable for crowded, prominent or darkly stained teeth.
Composite Veneers
Resin veneers built up directly onto the tooth in a single appointment. More affordable than porcelain, with a shorter lifespan and slightly less natural appearance — but a useful entry-level option.
Patients wanting a more affordable cosmetic upgrade. Trial run before committing to porcelain. Younger patients waiting to fully decide.
"Turkey teeth" is real. It's also avoidable.
You’ve seen the social media videos — uniform white teeth that look fake from across a room. There’s a reason that look became its own meme: the high-volume Turkey teeth clinics aren’t doing veneer work at all. They’re doing crown work, on healthy teeth, badly.
Here’s how to tell the difference between an honest veneer clinic and a Turkey teeth mill — before you book a flight.
The shaved-down tooth problem.
Turkey teeth clinics shave the tooth down to a stump 1.5–2mm of removal and put a full crown on top. That’s not a veneer — that’s a crown disguised as one. At Dentarma, veneers remove only 0.3–0.7mm of enamel. Your underlying tooth structure is preserved, alive, and undamaged.
One uniform shade for everyone.
The Turkey teeth look comes from clinics that put the same blinding-white shade on every patient regardless of skin tone, eye colour, or facial features. Real smile design starts with the patient’s face — Prof. Dr. Başak Şeker individually selects shade, translucency, and shape for each case using digital smile design previewed before any drilling.
20+ teeth covered when you only needed 8.
High-volume clinics push 20–28 veneer cases on patients who only had 6–8 visible teeth that needed cosmetic work. At Dentarma we treat the smile line — typically the 6–10 teeth visible when you smile. Anything beyond that is only proposed if there’s a clinical reason, and only with your written agreement.
Anonymous treatment by junior associates.
At Turkey teeth mills, your veneers are designed and placed by whichever associate is on shift that day. At Dentarma, every veneer case is led personally by Prof. Dr. Başak Şeker — co-founder, prosthodontist, twenty years of smile design. Same hands, every case, twenty years running.
Why we default to Ivoclar IPS e.max®.
IPS e.max is a high-strength lithium disilicate ceramic, engineered by Ivoclar Vivadent in Liechtenstein. It is the global gold standard for premium cosmetic veneers — used by top private dental clinics in London Harley Street, Beverly Hills, and Munich.
e.max combines two qualities that other ceramics struggle to balance: natural translucency (the way light passes through your real enamel) and high flexural strength (the ability to withstand normal biting forces for 15+ years). The veneer in your mouth is the same material used by top-tier private clinics worldwide.
Every Ivoclar IPS e.max veneer we place comes with manufacturer documentation that you and your UK dentist can independently verify.
Translucency
Natural light transmission almost identical to real enamel — no opaque “fake tooth” look.
Strength
~400 MPa flexural strength — significantly stronger than feldspathic and traditional porcelain.
Stain Resistance
Polished glass-ceramic surface resists tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco staining for life.
UK Recognition
The same material used by top UK private clinics — recognisable and serviceable by any UK dentist.
You see your new smile before we touch your teeth.
Every Dentarma veneer case starts with Digital Smile Design — a 3D simulation of your final smile that you review and approve before any preparation begins. If you don’t like the preview, we redesign it. The preparation never starts until you’re sure.
This protects you from the single biggest patient regret in cosmetic dentistry: arriving at the result and realising it’s not what you wanted. With DSD, you’ve seen your new smile from every angle before the first drill is ever picked up.
- Step 1. 3D scan of your existing teeth and bite using a digital intraoral scanner
- Step 2. Photographic analysis of your face — symmetry, lip line, smile arc, golden ratio
- Step 3. Prof. Dr. Şeker designs your new smile in 3Shape / exocad CAD software
- Step 4. You review the 3D preview from every angle and request adjustments
- Step 5. A physical mock-up ("trial smile") is bonded onto your teeth temporarily so you can see and feel the result in your real mouth
- Step 6. Only when you confirm — preparation begins, veneers are crafted, and final placement happens

How long do veneers last?
Properly placed E.max® porcelain veneers are designed to last 15+ years with normal wear. With the care guidance below, many of our patients are still wearing the same veneers we placed in 2010 and 2011 — going on 15+ years and counting.
The most important thing to understand about veneer longevity is that the veneer itself rarely “wears out” — it’s the bond, the underlying tooth, or the patient’s oral habits that determine real-world lifespan. Patients who treat their veneers like natural teeth get 15–20+ years. Patients who grind heavily, chew ice, or open bottles with their teeth get noticeably less.
Here’s what to expect through the first decade and beyond.
Year 0–1
Settling and adjustment period
Mild sensitivity to hot and cold for the first 2–4 weeks is normal. Full bite calibration happens at your first UK aftercare check-up. Veneers feel like natural teeth within 6–8 weeks.
Years 1–5
Stable performance
Full integration with your bite. No sensitivity. Annual UK aftercare check-ups. Stain-resistant surface maintains shade. Routine brushing and flossing only — no special maintenance required.
Years 5–10
Mature wear
Possible minor surface wear from grinding. A night guard prevents this entirely. Bonding remains strong. Natural teeth around the veneers may shift slightly with age — annual check-ups catch this early.
Years 10–15
Long-term durability
Most veneers continue performing well. A small percentage of patients may need a single veneer replacement due to chip, decalcification at the gum line, or bond degradation. We replace under our 10-year crown warranty.
Years 15+
End-of-life replacement
Many veneers continue functioning well past 15 years. Eventually, replacement is recommended — typically a faster, simpler process than the original treatment because the underlying tooth shape is already prepared.
Are you a good candidate for veneers?
Most healthy adults with mostly intact teeth are suitable for veneers. The criteria are different from implants — these are about the condition of your existing teeth and your aesthetic goals, not about jawbone or surgery readiness.
Healthy underlying teeth
Free of significant decay, large fillings, or root canal damage. We assess from your photos and X-rays during free consultation.
Good gum health
Gums free of active gum disease gingivitis or periodontitis. Treatable first if needed before veneer placement begins.
Sufficient enamel
Veneers bond to enamel — patients with very thin or worn-down enamel may need crowns instead. We check this from your X-rays.
Cosmetic motivation
Discoloured teeth, mild crowding, gaps, chips, or worn edges. Veneers are cosmetic — they shouldn’t be the answer to severe structural damage.
No severe grinding or willing to wear a night guard
Heavy nighttime grinding bruxism significantly reduces veneer lifespan. A custom night guard solves this for most patients.
Realistic expectations
Veneers are designed to enhance, not replace. They look like your best version of your real teeth, not someone else’s celebrity smile.
Commitment to aftercare
Twice-daily brushing, regular flossing, and at least annual professional cleaning. No special maintenance — just normal good hygiene.
Mature jaw structure
Generally over 18 years of age, with fully developed jaw bones and stable bite. No upper age limit — we treat patients into their 70s.
Your aftercare network is in the UK.
Every Dentarma veneer patient gets free post-treatment check-ups, bite adjustments, and professional polishing at one of three GDC-registered partner clinics across the UK — chosen so over 90% of UK patients are within 90 minutes of an aftercare appointment.

Veneer risks, and how we manage them.
Porcelain veneers are one of the most predictable treatments in cosmetic dentistry, with documented success rates above 95% at 10 years across decades of clinical research. There are still real risks worth understanding before you commit.
Temporary sensitivity to hot and cold.
The most common short-term side effect — affecting around 30% of patients in the first 2–4 weeks. Caused by the small amount of enamel removed during preparation.
A veneer cracks, chips, or breaks.
Rare with E.max® (less than 2% in 10 years) but possible if you bite something very hard, sustain facial trauma, or have severe untreated grinding. Always replaceable.
Sensitivity toothpaste prescribed at fitting. Almost always resolves within 4 weeks. Persistent sensitivity past 6 weeks — bring it up at your UK aftercare appointment, free to address.
10-year warranty covers free replacement of any chipped or cracked veneer. Custom night guard provided to all heavy grinders to prevent the risk entirely.
Risk 03 · Bond Failure
A veneer comes loose or falls off.
Can happen if bonding wasn’t done properly (poor moisture isolation, inadequate cement curing) or if the underlying tooth has decay that wasn’t caught. Rare with proper protocols.
Gum line recedes, exposing veneer edges.
A long-term cosmetic issue — natural age-related gum recession can eventually expose the veneer-tooth boundary, creating a visible dark line at the gum.
How Dentarma manages it
Hospital-grade isolation protocols, dual-cure resin cement, every case bonded under rubber dam. If a veneer debonds within 10 years, we re-bond or replace free of charge.
How Dentarma manages it
Annual UK aftercare check-ups catch early recession. Margin design (where the veneer meets the gum) optimised by Prof. Dr. Şeker to delay this issue. Replacement at 15–20 years if needed.
The final result doesn’t look how you imagined.
The biggest patient anxiety with cosmetic work — and the entire reason Dentarma uses Digital Smile Design. Without DSD, you commit to a result you’ve never seen.
“Premium” upgrades or extras added on arrival.
A common Turkey clinic risk — not clinical, but financial. The most common patient complaint in dental tourism. Clinics promote one price online and quote another in person.
Mandatory Digital Smile Design + physical mock-up before any preparation begins. You see, feel, and approve the result on your own teeth before we start drilling. No surprises possible.
Your written quote is fixed before you commit. The only changes happen if a clinical issue not visible on your X-ray is discovered — and only with your written agreement before any extra work is done.

Everything else you might want to know.
Will my veneers look like "Turkey teeth"?
No — and that’s the whole point of how we work. The “Turkey teeth” look comes from clinics that put one uniform blinding-white shade on every patient regardless of skin tone, age, or facial features. At Dentarma, every smile is individually designed by Prof. Dr. Başak Şeker using Digital Smile Design, with shade and translucency chosen to match your face — not a viral aesthetic. You see and approve the design before any tooth preparation begins.
Are veneers painful?
Veneer preparation is performed under local anaesthesia, so the procedure itself is painless. Most patients describe it as more comfortable than a routine filling. Mild sensitivity to hot and cold for 2–4 weeks afterward is normal — sensitivity toothpaste is provided and almost always resolves within a month.
How many veneers do I need?
It depends on what’s visible when you smile. Typically: 6–8 veneers covers the upper smile line for a noticeable improvement, 16 veneers covers both upper and lower for a full Hollywood smile, and 20 veneers covers a complete smile makeover. We never push more than your case actually needs — if 8 will do, we’ll quote you 8.
Can I just get veneers on the front teeth that bother me?
Yes. Many of our patients have only 4–8 veneers on the most visible front teeth. The challenge with partial veneers is shade matching — your veneers need to match your remaining natural teeth perfectly, otherwise the contrast is visible. We address this with photographic colour matching during smile design.
How much enamel do you remove?
For E.max® veneers: typically 0.3–0.7mm of enamel from the front surface only. For composite or no-prep veneers: even less. The tooth structure underneath remains alive and healthy. This is the critical difference from “Turkey teeth” crown work, which removes 1.5–2mm of tooth structure and grinds the tooth to a stump.
Are veneers reversible?
Largely no. A small amount of enamel is permanently removed during preparation, so you’ll always need either veneers or some form of restoration on those teeth going forward. This is why Digital Smile Design is non-negotiable at Dentarma — you see and approve the result on your own teeth (via mock-up) before any irreversible step.
How long do veneers last?
Properly placed E.max® porcelain veneers are designed to last 15+ years. Long-term studies show survival rates above 95% at 10 years and around 85% at 15 years. Many of our patients are still wearing the same veneers we placed in 2010 and 2011 — going on 15+ years and counting. We provide a 10-year warranty for replacement.
Can I whiten my veneers later?
No — porcelain veneers don’t whiten. The shade you choose during smile design is the shade you keep. This is why shade selection in DSD is so important. Patients sometimes whiten their natural lower teeth to match the upper veneers if needed; we discuss this during planning.
What can I eat with veneers?
Almost anything. Once your final E.max® veneers are bonded, you can eat normally — including steak, apples, nuts, and toast. Avoid biting directly into very hard items (ice, hard sweets, bones) and don’t use your teeth as tools (opening packets, biting nails). These rules apply to natural teeth too.
How do I clean veneers?
Exactly like natural teeth — twice-daily brushing with a soft-bristled brush and non-abrasive toothpaste, daily flossing, and routine professional cleanings. No special tools or maintenance routine required. Avoid abrasive whitening toothpastes which can dull the polished finish over time.
Will my veneers stain over time?
E.max® porcelain is highly stain-resistant — significantly more so than natural enamel. Tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco do not stain the porcelain itself. The bonding line at the gum can occasionally pick up minor staining, which annual UK aftercare polishing addresses easily and free of charge.
What if I don't like the result?
This is why Dentarma uses Digital Smile Design with a physical mock-up before any preparation. You see the design in 3D, then we bond a temporary mock-up onto your teeth so you can see and feel it in your real mouth. If you don’t like it, we redesign — and the preparation never starts until you confirm. This protects you from the most common cosmetic dentistry regret.
Can I have veneers if I grind my teeth?
Yes — but you’ll need a custom night guard. Heavy grinding (bruxism) significantly reduces veneer lifespan if untreated. A custom night guard, included with our smile makeover packages, eliminates the issue entirely. We screen for grinding during your smile design appointment and discuss this with every patient.
Are Turkey veneers the same quality as UK veneers?
When the material is the same brand (Ivoclar IPS e.max), placed by a qualified prosthodontist, in a properly equipped clinic — yes, identically. The veneer in your mouth is the same physical product available to a top London Harley Street clinic. The price difference reflects operating costs in Antalya — clinic rent, staff salaries, taxation — not material or clinical quality.
What happens at the UK aftercare appointment?
UK aftercare appointments at our partner clinics in Glasgow, Surrey, or North Croydon include: routine check-up of your veneers and gum line, professional polishing to restore surface lustre, bite adjustments if needed, and triage of any concerns. Major repairs or full replacements happen at Dentarma in Antalya under your warranty — we cover flights and hotel for warranty-related return visits.
